Young Kayla suffers from alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that attacks her hair follicles and practically causes baldness. Despite her condition, Miss Martell competed in the beauty contest several times, but was finally thinking of giving up her dream of winning the Miss Delaware title. A meeting with five-year-old Lilliana Hakim, who suffered from the same condition she did, changed her mind and inspired her to keep on trying. And this time around, her dream came true as she was named Miss Delaware and got to represent her home state in the Miss America beauty pageant.
Some say Kayla Martell won the title because, unlike the previous times she competed, she wore a wig to conceal her condition. Asked how she feels on the matter, the bubbly beauty queen responded â€œnot at all. I hope the judges picked me because I knew I could fulfill the jobs of Miss Delaware.â€� She added that she only wears the wig on occasions, because it makes her feel more approachable, but she usually prefers the natural look.
Kayla started losing her hair when she was just 10 years old. She noticed her part was widening, and when that turned into a bald spot, doctors diagnosed her with alopecia areata. Though it wasnâ€™t easy going through her teen years with a disease like this, she handled it with grace, and is now using her position as Miss Delaware to find and help other people who have alopecia.

In Madrid for a few days opened hotel called Beach Garbage Hotel, built entirely of waste from landfills and beaches in Europe, the project Save the Beach («save the beach"), organized by the Mexican brewing brand Corona. The building was designed by German architect Hans-Jurgen Schult (Hans-Jürgen Schult). For his creation, he used cans of Coca-Cola, plastic cups, pack of cigarettes and other debris. Total for the construction of the hotel took 12 tons of waste, which for months was collected on European beaches. 5 rooms in the hotel, the decoration of which also consists of what has been found on the street.As a result of competition for the project page «Save the Beach» in the social network Facebook, the organizers have selected a few winners, who were given the opportunity to become a free guests of the new hotel. After spending the night in a garbage room they are invited to share their impressions.
According to the author of the project, the hotel Beach Garbage Hotel - a model of the world where people come just for a while, and do not care about what will come after them.

No. 1. Apple's iPad

It rocks to be Apple. Following on the success of its iPod and iPhone launches, the consumer electronics company announced this year that iPad sales surpassed those of its popular MacBooks. Analyst reports have predicted that sales of the tablet computer could hit 6.3 million units during the December season.

No. 2. Microsoft's Windows 7

Responding to consumers' complaints that its Windows Vista operating system was riddled with problems, Microsoft set out to improve its product. This time, however, the company opened its doors wide to consumers, giving them a say in the final product. The result was a new and improved version, Windows 7, which features touch-screens, better sharing between devices and faster access to files and programs. Consumers, indeed, like it when a brand listens.

No. 3. Mars' Pretzel M&Ms

The confectionary giant's Pretzel M&M's satisfied frugal consumers' indulgence for affordable sweet treats. The product is essentially a pretzel inside an M&M, which proves that sometimes the best ideas can be quite simple.

No. 4. Motorola Droid

Verizon Wireless, the exclusive carrier of Motorola's Droid phone in the U.S., knew it faced some tough challenges when going up against Apple's ever-popular iPhone. So what did the wireless giant do? It heralded the new smartphone via an ad campaign mocking its rival's weaknesses--which, it turned out, were the Droid's strengths. A few examples: Unlike Droids, iPhones can't "run simultaneous apps," "take 5-megapixel pictures" or "take pictures in the dark." Talk about taking swipes at the competitor.

No. 5. McDonald's McCafé Real Fruit Smoothies

First McDonald's went after Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts with the launch of its cheaper-priced espressos and frappuccinos. Then the fast food giant added smoothie chains like Jamba Juice to its hit list with the addition of Real Fruit Smoothies to its McCafé specialty drinks line. The fruit blends, which come in flavors like wild berry and strawberry banana, quickly caught on among consumers thirsting for an affordable, healthy, grab-and-go treat.

No. 6. iPod Nano

Apple's iPod never seems to go away, despite having debuted more than nine years ago. The latest iteration is the sixth-generation iPod Nano, which is now smaller and has multi-touch capabilities, among other new features. Users can drag an icon across the screen and watch it "jiggle," or tap into radio, album or "Genius," "go-great-together" song mixes.

No. 7. Starbucks Via

Critics and seasoned coffee drinkers alike were skeptical when Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz unveiled the company's next billion-dollar enterprise: Via instant coffee. In taste tests consumers apparently couldn't tell the difference, Starbucks has said of the product. The chain's on-the-go coffee, which can be served hot or cold, surpassed $100 million in worldwide sales in just 10 months, despite reports that some Starbucks baristas may have rewarded consumers with free drinks in exchange for buying the product. True or not, Via's push into overseas and U.S. retail channels definitely accounts for a chunk of that lift.

No. 8. Samsung 3-D TV

Twentieth Century Fox's release of Avatar fueled the 3-D craze, and consumer electronics maker Samsung quickly jumped aboard, releasing the world's first 3-D LED televisions earlier this year. Competitors LG, Toshiba and Panasonic followed suit, but as Samsung's placement on this list shows, there are definite first-mover advantages.

A diaper as a fashion statement? A commercial for Kimberly-Clark's Huggies Little Movers limited edition jeans diaper release shows a boy strutting around in a denim-patterned bottom. A line in the commercial says it all: "The coolest you'll ever look pooping your pants."

No. 10 (tie) Kleenex Hand Towels

Disposable hand towels have been around for as long as anyone can remember. In March Kimberly-Clark began peddling a need for one-time-use hand towels in the home. That's because one's "hands are only as clean as the towel used to dry them," says one ad, which compares the difference between an often-used towel and a Kleenex Hand towel. Given the nation's green concerns, how did Kimberly-Clark manage to pull this off? It says its towels are made from 100% virgin fibers and are recyclable.

No. 10 (tie) KFC Double Down Sandwich

KFC had meat- and veggie-lovers' heads spinning when it took the bun off its popular heart attack sandwich. Double Down, as the invention was called, packed two slices of bacon, Monterey jack and pepper jack cheese and the chain's super-secret Colonel's sauce between two "thick and juicy boneless chicken filets," per KFC's site. The Original Recipe fried version clocks in at 540 calories and 1,380 mg of sodium, while the Grilled version isn't any better: 460 cals and 1,430 mg of sodium. Vegetarians were apparently so appalled that they came out with a 100% meatless spin-off of the sandwich--before KFC's hit the market, that is.

Grandmaster Alik Gershon plays chess simultaneously against 525 players in Tel Aviv, Isreal on Oct. 21, 2010. Grandmaster Alik Gershon, former Israeli champion and European youth champion, began playing chess simultaneously against 525 players to set a new world record on Thursday. The event will continue until the morning of Friday Oct. 22.The present Guinness world record for simultaneous chess, where one player plays against a number of players, was set on Aug. 13, 2009 by the Iranian chess grandmaster Morteza Mahjoub playing 500 games.

Britain's 'Mini Monet' Kieron Williamson is Eight Years Old

Britain’s ‘Mini Monet,’ Kieron Williamson, is eight years old and earned nearly a quarter million dollars at a recent art show where individual pieces sold for between $3,600 and $16,000 each. Buyers traveled to the Norfolk gallery from around the world and camped out for two days outside the gallery so they wouldn’t miss the chance to purchase.

The talented young artist began painting in 2008 after a family trip. His work has been well received, earning him the nickname of Mini Monet. Kieron Williamson is well on his way to life as a professional artist.

This massive milk carton castle has been crowned the largest sculpture made from recycled materials by the folks at the Guinness Book of Records. Spain has had a busy summer, as the project on the grounds of Facultad de Arquitectura de Granada just beat out another record-breaking recycled project from up north.
They did it by enlisting 5,000 local elementary students to compete in sourcing as many cardboard milk containers as they could. The result — an interactive citadel of cartons totaling 50,000 boxes.

The Guinness Book of Records measured the project at 29 metres (95 ft 1 in) in length, 14.07 metres (46 ft 1 in) in width and 7 meters (22 ft 11 in) in height — but no word on number of milk mustaches. The tower was designed by an architecture student and it features a turret tower, an open roof that creates daylit patterns, and a huge maze to explore. The building blocks were constructed using just glue and staples. While this may technically be reuse rather than recycling, we bet that it will inspire a lot of kids to rethink (and reuse) what they used to just throw away.
